Effective Date: May 17, 2024
This Privacy Notice for Virtual and Augmented Reality Experiences applies to the personal information collected through virtual reality experiences, such as The Field and Iconic Mints, (collectively, the “Virtual Experience”) and augmented reality experiences, such as the decARbon Canvas, (the “AR Experience”, the AR Experiences and the Virtual Experiences are sometimes referred to collectively as the “Experiences”) operated by Dow Jones & Company, Inc. (“Dow Jones” “we” “us “our”). This Privacy Notice for Virtual and Augmented Reality Experiences supplements the Dow Jones Privacy Notice, which generally explains our personal information collection, use, and disclosure.
If you are located in the European Economic Area (EEA) or in the United Kingdom, please refer to the Dow Jones Privacy Notice for more information on our data practices in the EEA and UK including how to exercise your EEA or UK privacy rights. If you are a California resident, please refer to the Section 5.3 “California Privacy Rights” of the Dow Jones Privacy Notice for more information on our data practices with respect to California residents, including how to exercise your California privacy rights.
Note that you may visit, use, or otherwise access the Experiences through an online service or platform that we do not control, such as a virtual reality headset. The Experiences may also contain links to, or features facilitated by, other online services. We are not responsible for the privacy practices, advertising, products, or content of online services and platforms that Dow Jones does not control. Please note that other online services and platforms may have their own privacy policies.
We may change this Privacy Notice from time to time. If we make changes, we will notify you by revising the date at the top of this Privacy Notice.
Information We May Collect, How We Use Information, and Your Choices
When you visit, use, or otherwise access an Experience, we may collect certain types of information from you to facilitate, maintain, operate, improve and optimize the Experience. For example, we may collect:
Interaction data about user interactions with the Experience, such as the number of users who visited an Experience, the number of users interacting with an Experience (or in a particular virtual story or room) at one same time, average time on the Experience, whether Experience features are activated (such as the planting of flowers in an AR Experience), and the start and end time of a user’s interaction with the Experience. We use Google Analytics to obtain these metrics. This helps us to better understand how you interact with the Experience so we can improve it. For more information on how Google Analytics uses data collected through the Experience, visit: www.google.com/policies/privacy/partners/. You may opt out of Google Analytics by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on, which is available for most browsers, or changing the settings on your browser or device. Note that certain browsers or platforms that you may use to access the Experience may have additional analytics opt out tools, which may or may not affect our collection of analytics using Google Analytics. Please review your settings on such browsers and platforms carefully.
Additionally, the Virtual Experience may allow you to move in the virtual space in sync with your physical movements. For example, if you access the Virtual Experience through a browser, your mouse movements affect your virtual movements. If you access the Virtual Experience through a virtual reality headset, your controller or headset movements may affect your virtual movements.
The AR Experience uses your device camera to provide you with an experience connected to your physical surroundings. Specifically, the AR Experience may process your positional, device orientation, and rotation data through your device camera while you are interacting with the AR Experience to allow you to experience the AR Experience with, as an overlay against, your physical surroundings. These types of movement data and data captured by your device camera are processed on device and are deleted at or shortly after the end of your session in the Virtual Experience or AR Experience, as applicable (i.e. when you exit or close out of the Experience website or application).
Technical data, such as information about your web browser, IP address, time zone, the type of device (and operating system) you use to connect to the Experience, and other technical data to load and operate the Experience. In Virtual Experiences, we may also collect audio level measurements of voice communications.
Audio interactions, such as your live voice communications through the Virtual Experience, if your microphone is on. You have the ability to speak and listen to others through the Virtual Experience in a public setting. We do not record or store the audio, which will be communicated live through the Virtual Experience. However, other users may record their interactions in the Virtual Experience, which may include your audio. You may toggle your microphone on or off at any time during the Virtual Experience.
If you choose to name your avatar in a Virtual Experience, the name will be shared with others in the Virtual Experience. We do not store the name.
Your web browser or device may have settings that allow you to transmit a “Do Not Track” signal when you visit various websites or use online services. Like many online services, the Experiences are not designed to respond to “Do Not Track” signals. To learn more about “Do Not Track” signals, you may wish to visit http://www.allaboutdnt.com/. We or external parties may collect information about your online activities over time and across different online services when you use the Experiences.
Information We Share
We may share aggregated interaction data we obtain through an Experience with our affiliates and subsidiaries. We also may share information we obtain through an Experience with service providers to perform certain services on our behalf, such as the facilitation, maintenance, and with respect to the Virtual Experience, live casting, of an Experience.
Security
We maintain appropriate administrative, technical, and physical safeguards designed to help protect personal information collected or received through the Experiences. Although we use reasonable efforts to safeguard information, transmission via the Internet is not completely secure and we cannot guarantee the security of your information collected through any Experience.
